Project Objectives
The Cows Create Careers project:
- Introduces students to the opportunities for both vocational and university pathways.
- Involves dairy farmers and industry advocates who have vision and dairy industry knowledge to encourage and support students with the project.
- Supports students in making career decisions by providing and creating linkages between the education and employment sectors.
- Rewards successful students and schools at the program conclusion, Presentation & Awards Day.
Project Summary
The Cows Create Careers project involves:
- Dairy farmers delivering two calves for a 3 week period to the school.
- Supplies and curriculum materials being provided to the school at no cost.
- An industry advocate visiting the school and talking to the students.
- Students working in teams of 4-5 to complete assessment tasks.
- A Presentation & Awards Day.
- Media coverage throughout the project.
Project Achievements
In 2024, the Cows Create Careers project will celebrate 20 years of delivery into Australian Schools.
The program is delivered annually to 23 dairy regions, involving 240 schools and over 15,000 students.
In 2022, the project received recognition from the Victoria Curriculum and Assessment Authority and is now embedded in the Design and Technologies, Food and Fbire Production, Levels 7 & 8.
Cheese your Own Creation Programme
Project Objectives
Cheese your own Creation programme will:
- Encourage students to understand the importance of the Australian dairy industry to Regional economies
- Educate students about the vast array of career pathways available in the dairy manufacturing industry
- Increase awareness about the Australian dairy industry and its products
- Provide a platform for the industry, education and community to work together
- Showcase the nutritional benefits of dairy to the school community through students’ work
- Provide the dairy industry with good news stories
- Reward successful students and schools at the conclusion of the programme with personalised certificates and prizes.
Programme Summary
Schools/Teachers will be provided with:
- An introduction to the Cheese your own Creation programme
- A comprehensive Teacher & Student Handbook utilising ACARA curriculum connections, as well as other supporting resources
- An egg timer to conduct the “egg-timer” test and individual student prizes
- A $100 Coles gift voucher to purchase dairy products
- A digital sample of the previous year’s Dairy Calendar.
- Students in teams of two will complete the following tasks:
- Task 1. Make a recipe for their dairy creation using dairy products
- Task 2. Read, learn then answer the “egg-timer” test sheet
- Task 3. Design a single A4 landscape page with their recipe and dairy creation for inclusion in the following years’ Dairy Calendar
- Task 4. Complete entry and exit surveys using the supplied survey monkey link.
The programme will
- Award a certificate of participation to each student involved
- Award prizes to the winning schools and students
- Achieve local media coverage
- Leave a legacy of good news about the dairy industry in their school community.

- In 2020, the programme was delivered to 70 schools across Australia involving over 2,000 students. First started in 2018, so has been running successfully in schools for 3 years.
Curds & Why Programme
Project Objectives
Curds & Why programme will:
- Encourage students to understand the importance of the Australian dairy industry to Regional economies
- Educate students about the vast array of career pathways available in the dairy manufacturing industry
- Provide a real life learning experience of how chemistry and dairy products connect
- Increase awareness about the Australian dairy industry and its products
- Provide a platform for the industry, education and community to work together
- Showcase the nutritional benefits of dairy to the school community through students’ work
- Provide the dairy industry with good news stories
- Reward the successful students and schools at the conclusion of the programme with personalised certificates and prizes.
Programme Summary
Schools/Teachers will be provided with:
- An introduction to the Curds & Why programme
- A comprehensive Teacher & Student Handbook utilising ACARA curriculum connections, as well as other supporting resources
- A class set of “dairy billboards” for students
- A jar and marbles to conduct the “butter-it-up test” and individual student prizes
- A $100 Coles gift voucher to purchase dairy products.
- Students in teams of 2-3 will complete the following tasks:
- Task 1. Select a creative name for their Curds & Why team and take a photo
- Task 2. Undertake a science experiment and complete a science report on curds and whey
- Task 3. Read, learn and answer the “butter-it-up” test
- Task 4. Design a “dairy billboard” showcasing the connection between Chemistry-Curds-Cheese
- Task 5. Complete entry and exit surveys using the supplied survey monkey links.
The programme will
- Award a certificate of participation to each student involved
- Award prizes to the winning schools and students
- Achieve local media coverage
- Leave a legacy of good news about dairy in their school community.
